Nitro City, 2033. Leon "Catwalk" Caliber left his cop job in DC behind, heading to the City of Angels to earn a living off the grid. He took a few odd jobs that called for his particular skill set – extortion, espionage, and the occasional hit – and managed to carve out a niche for himself among the Downtown dwellers. All that changed when a new breed of MetaHuman cyborg appeared on the streets with explosive violence. Cat’s quiet existence is sent into turmoil when he finds himself right in the crosshairs. He must evade the assassin squads sent by a vengeful pimp, uncover the origin of these mysterious new mechs, and keep the cops off of his tail. Simple enough, except that the cybernetic technology that powers his body threatens to sever his humanity at any moment. Can the killer with a conscience find a cure, solve the case, get the girl, and live to see another day?

Catwalk Messiah Nick Kelly 9780985283766 Books

Nick Kelly's tale of Leon Caliber, aka "Catwalk" is a dark, gripping tale of a cybernetically enhanced policeman turned hitman in the sordid post-apocalyptic world of Los Angeles filled with crime, greed, violence, high living and--oh yes--the appearance of Meta Humans who are part person, part machine and all destructive power. Contemporary versions of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse are unleashed on the city and its hapless population, and it is up to Catwalk to overcome his past and defeat these creatures masterminded by an evil scientist, with a lot of help from his friends.

Nick Kelly excels in this work, featuring a peerless sense of style, a narrative flow that grabs the reader by the throat and won't let go and some of the oddest and most original characters to stain the pages of this or any other novel. The roots of the story run deep into Elizabethan revenge plays, but the telling is as contemporary as tomorrow's headlines.

This nightmare come to life is not for everyone, but for anyone who wants a ripping good yarn told by a talented young author, this read is for you. Don't delay in getting your copy as soon as you can. Catwalk and his friends (and his nightmare enemies)are waiting to show you a scary good time.

Catwalk Messiah Nick Kelly 9780985283766 Books Reviews

Dark, gritty, edgy, with a macabre but barking sense of humor, Nick Kelly's characters leap from the page. A great romp of a read if you want futuristic steampunk scifi detective noir.

A wonderfully colorful read!
For my foray back into cyberpunk, I picked up this book from Nick Kelly. I loved it! There is a bit of irreverence that goes well with the dark theme and action packed pace. Catwalk has a bit of a sardonic wit that I found perfect for the character. Basically, this is a quick read with a lead character you want to win and I find myself looking forward to the next installment.
Recommended to me after enjoying Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep, I found this book and the world created in it fascinating.

The story has an interesting take on cybernetic body modifications, all tied together with a hero you're actively cheering for and a 'chit' ton of action. The author jumped between characters throughout which personally I enjoyed, as it gave a great sense of the chaotic life Catwalk lives.

I'll be waiting anxiously for the next in the series!
Kelly does a terrific job introducing the characters, sucking you into a very complex plot and splashing in just the right amount of heavy violence, sex and dystopian political commentary. Antagonists are sinister and well thought out and characters are believable and easy to get attached to.

Very enjoyable read that I had a difficult time putting down, and I'm really looking forward to the next installment.
In the beginning, it was hard to grasp. The main character was hard flesh out without a point of reference. My lack of imagination had a difficult time creating an image of exactly what "catwalk" looked like. Once I got past the initial issues the book was a decent read. I am not a big fan of jumping around in a story unless your side stories have a purpose and tie it all together. Some of the side stories never panned out. It left me wondering what happened. In my opinion, the book could have been longer and completed the side stories for a better understanding of the main characters.
"I'm an independent contractor, an odd-jobs man, what some people would call a 'cleaner.' Usually, it means protection or kidnapping, or on rare occasion, retiring a competitor. In a sentence ... I'm not always a hero." --Leon "Catwalk" Caliber

Leon "Catwalk" Caliber is a metahuman--a human enhanced with technology to make him stronger and faster than the average person. In essence, it makes him a better hitman. I really liked Catwalk's character. He's dark, tortured, cynical, sarcastic, and loyal. He doesn't dwell much on his abandonment of his family and life on the street as a child or even his time spent in an orphanage that taught him the value of friendship. We see his early traumas through snippets which add depth and understanding for why and how he became Catwalk. We even get to view the softer side of this techno-hitman, but you'll have to read the story to understand what I mean. ;)

What was most interesting about this character is how he toes the line between an emotional human and calculating killing machine. He struggles to not turn into that which he is battling metahumans who have lost their humanity. And he briefly crosses the line in the many action-packed fight sequences throughout the book as Catwalk fights to stop a maniac from unleashing his crazed metahuman creations on the city and starting an apocalypse.

Overall, it reminded me of a pulp detective novel set in a technological, desolate future. As I read it, I got flashes of Blade Runner with the gritty cityscape Kelly paints. I enjoyed the details of Catwalk's world where technology could turn people's dreams--and nightmares--into reality. Kelly does a great job of weaving in details within the action so the scenes are not bogged down by descriptions but keep the story and pace moving forward.

I look forward to reading more about Catwalk's adventures in this dark, interesting series!
