Long Ago and Far Away Robert Joseph 9781506193977 Books
Long Ago and Far Away is a dramatic coming of age story set while World War II was just about to end. Toby is a teenage boy, small for his age yet no less a young man. When hes forced to spend his summer at a lake resort as his aunts chaperone, he imagines hell be spending his time swimming. However, he makes a friend/rival, gets a crush on a local girl who doesn't want to give him the time of day, and is pushed into joining the opera performances by his aunt.Leyla, meanwhile, is no slouch, as she has her own worries and adventures while she tries to further her career as a soprano in the opera. The two characters will find out a lot about themselves and grow a bit as that long summer stretches on.
The book sometimes drops knowledge about the various ways the ongoing war effected the peoples lives and dispositions, creating an informative and believable setting. Leyla, having an affluent husband, finds ways around the various restrictions. History buffs will get a kick out of it. The story is charming and slower, reminding one of simpler times when summer was spent outdoors and not in front of a computer or TV.

Long Ago and Far Away Robert Joseph 9781506193977 Books Reviews
Very enjoyable. I recommend it.
Robert Joseph has written a fascinating story about a youngster's adventurous journey into the wilds with his aunt. This period piece
set during World War 11 riveted my attention throughout. Thanks Robert - John Stark, Producer/Writer for film and plays.
“A solid story that evokes strong images of a different time. Much like one of my favorite movies, ‘The Summer of ’42’, it entertains with the intriguing charm of a coming-of-age story, a story that we’ve all lived.”
Leyla Lemay, an aspiring opera singer performing at a tent opera in pennsylvania during the wartime where rationing and the draft are at an all time high. Accompainied by her nephew Toby, who she constantly is trying to get involved in the opera, all Toby wants is to spend the summer at the lake and get to know a beautiful girl Ursula. Ursula has her attention stolen by the male lead singer at the opera and we have a wonderful coming of age story set during WWII that reminds of all of the journey we all go through during life as we try to determine what to expect from this life.
An interesting read. The cover was very deceptive as it looks nothing like what would be expected from a WWII novel I kept waiting for flash forwards to present day. They did not happen of course. I liked the progression of the storyline and felt myself connecting with the characters on deeper levels as the story went on. Some of the clothing descriptions seemed to not fit with the time period to me but I could be wrong. All in all, a quick but intriguing read I would recommend.
cant' seem to get into the story. may pick it up again later.
a rare novel that combines a knowledgeable, realistic setting of the production of several operas, with the drama of a American extended family stressed by frustrated talent, ambition, and infidelity. Seen through the eyes of an adolescent boy, transplanted from his working class background to a summer with his affluent, musically gifted aunt, whose career is being destroyed by her jealous, foreign-born husband, the story also charts his emotional growth through his evolving relationships. The stunning climax is built on many scenes that the reader can visualize and feel through the exquisite writing. A must read.
I generally like books from the "old days" and this was no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot lines. It kept my interest from beginning to end. There were even a few twists I didn't see coming. The characters were believable and quite a colorful bunch. I liked the fact that it took place in the Pocono's as I vacation in that area quite often. Overall a really good read.
