The Over Duet is a story first loves, second chances, and hard truths.
I fancy myself a purveyor of truth, a sifter of lies, a cutter of bullshit. It’s not a gift, but rather, all skill, honed to a razor’s edge after one too many trips down the rabbit hole.
Some may dismiss my talent as misplaced and misguided cynicism, but they’d be wrong. Cliches about hope and faith in mankind are concocted unicorn farts, an effort to keep the dreamers dreaming. Experiences don’t lie—people do.
While I’m not proud of the circumstances that led me to this way of thinking, I respect the journey. The road to enlightenment can be dark and foreboding, but the destination makes it all worthwhile.
But funny thing about the past—it’s a defiant child refusing to stay in time out. No matter how deeply buried, it can always pop up when least expected, and sink its fucking claws into the flesh of your heart. No, not my heart—I no longer have one. I foolishly gave it away years ago, but I still feel the ripping in my chest as I fist the crumpled note left on my porch.
I’ve avoided this day, ran from it, for the past eight years. And still we meet again.
But to truly understand … to feel my dread and fear my future as I do, it’s important to know what happened in my past.
Or who ...
My name is Marlo Rivers, and this is my story of corrupted love.

Low Over High is a story about Marlo "Low" and Everett "Ever." We have seen Marlo in past Over installments, but she gets to shine in her own book. This book is actually set primarily in her high school days. She grew up on a farm in Texas with her dad and brother. Her mother ran away when she is younger, but is trying to repair the relationship with Marlo. She asks Marlo to move to New Orleans to attend a private school for her last year of high school. Her mother and stepfather agree to pay for the expense and build on that relationship. Marlo is one of the happiest people you will ever meet and always sees the glass as half full. She meets a great group of friends at her school and has a not-so-nice run-in with Ever. They can't tolerate each other in the beginning and have a love/hate relationship. That eventually grows into more as they coincidentally work at the same place together. They realize that they have something special, but Ever has is own demons that he is dealing with. Ever's worst nightmare affects Marlo in return. Something happens that makes Marlo not as happy or as positive about love and life in general. Their lives are forever changed and in a very gut-wrenching way. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that has us to the current lives of both of these characters.I absolutely loved this book. I have enjoyed all of the Over books, but this one just got to me. I loved Ever and Low and how their relationship evolved. The events near the end just gutted me and I can't believe we have to wait until January 2017 to see how their lives move forward. I think they may be my favorite Over couple and they aren't even together. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Low Over High The Over Duet Book 1 edition by JA DeRouen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
To quote what I yelled as I finished this book
What the ever ducking sh*t woman?! I'm dying here! DYING!!! You better get me that next book really soon! You CANNOT just destroy me with this book and leave me hanging!!!
Yes, this book ended on a slight cliffhanger, which I was aware of before reading. However, I was not nearly ready to let go of these characters yet, especially after waiting so long to finally get Marlo's story! Technically I started reading this last night but was so tired I only got in one chapter. I woke up this morning and decided to read a little bit with my coffee. Then it was read some more while the laundry is in the washer and dryer. Guess who still has clothes in the dryer? Yep, this girl! It was getting later in the day and I knew I soon had to go take care of farm chores, even my 5 year old was reminding me to get ready. Did I put the book down? Nope. I made another cup of coffee and told my son we would do chores after I finished it. By then I only had 20 minutes left in the book so I locked myself in the bathroom just so I could continue reading. I forgot to leave time for recovery but if I waited for that the chickens would still be waiting on me. Lesson of the day? Do not read a J.A. DeRouen book when you have things that need to be done that day.
On a more serious note, I loved getting to know Marlo's past, and how it shaped her into the strong woman she is today. I laughed so many times while reading, and I cried at a few parts. Ever.... He was a flawed young man but I couldn't help but love him. I'm now anxiously awaiting the conclusion of their story, which shouldn't be long at all. At least it better not be. Now off to drown my book hangover in wine.
People who have read the other books in J.A. DeRouen's Over series, each of which is written as a standalone but feature a wonderful cast of characters who cross over between them as each story intersects with the others will have already met Marlow.
The thing about her? She's one of those characters that even with the briefest of appearances, leaves you with the certain knowledge that ... there's a story there. Brash yet sensitive, loving yet aloof, loyal to a fault yet the most commitment phobic character you're ever likely to meet. You just know that whatever might happen to her in the future, she's already got a story to tell. Something happened that made her that way.
Sandwiched between a prologue and an epilogue set in the series' "present", Low Over High, the first of a duet of books that focus on Marlow, regales us with what went down during her senior year of high school. Thus, for the most part, it reads much like a young adult high school romance, but don't be fooled.
So many labels could be thrown at this tale. A fish out of water, coming of age, friends to lovers, a story of hope and new beginnings, a chronicle of deceit and betrayal. Above all, it's a history, that like all histories, forms a foundation for what is to come.
While I've loved the other books in the series, each more than the last, right from the start, Marlow's is the one I've been hanging out for. She's the one character from that ensemble cast whose mysterious past has constantly teased my imagination, and I was at first a little surprised by the direction this book took, but the effortless writing style kept me enthralled. The vivid characters who surround her, not least of which is the enigmatic bad boy Ever who despite a rocky start quickly becomes a focal point in her life, drive the story ever deeper so much so that I entirely forgot the sense of foreboding engendered by the prologue.
Told from dual points of view, one might think that any book styled as the first of a duet, would necessarily leave the reader with the worst kind of cliffhanger, but while there's certainly a big tease, I felt that this part of Marlow's story was essentially whole and self contained.
Once again I'm left in a state of stunned wonderment at the masterful storytelling that J.A. DeRouen brings to her novels, and salivating at the thought of what is to come in Ever over After.
